​ARTIST STATEMENT

Yuliya Chernyshova is a fine artist whose work is deeply rooted in her lifelong relationship with the sea.

She graduated from the School of Fine Arts at the age of 11, and since then has continued to develop a practice centered on observation, light, and movement.

Raised by the coast, Yuliya spent countless hours studying the shifting surface of the water—the rhythm of the waves, the variations of color, and the way light transforms the sea from moment to moment. She studies closely how light passes through water, shaping depth, transparency, and motion beneath the surface.

In addition to her artistic training, she also worked as a trainer with dolphins and seals, an experience that deepened her intuitive understanding of movement, behavior, and the fluid intelligence of water itself.

In her work, she seeks to understand the anatomy of waves: how form, force, and light interact within constant motion. The sea becomes both subject and language, expressed through layered observations of movement, transparency, and chromatic change.

Working primarily with soft pastels and watercolors, she embraces the challenge of capturing something inherently transient. Each painting is an attempt to hold what cannot be held—the shifting, living surface of water in motion.
