ARTIST STATEMENT
For me, lapidary and metal work elicit a feeling of anticipation and excitement. Anticipation of what is possible -the challenge of figuring out how it might work- and then taking the leap to do it. With stone and metal, I’m as excited when I see the raw material —imagining what is possible— as I am when I look at the finished piece.
As a jeweler/lapidary, I make contemporary jewelry using stone, metal and enamel. Stone carving, forging, stamping, enameling, and making chains are some of my favourite techniques. In 2017, I began doing lapidary and making jewelry to compliment my career. I received my training in jewelry techniques at École de joaillerie de Montréal, after an introduction to lapidary at the Ottawa Lapidary and Mineral Club. Currently, I work out of my studio in Chelsea, Québec.
I use a variety of metals in my designs, including sterling silver, fine silver, and for some pieces, gold. For my enamel pieces, I use copper or fine silver as the base. When creating my designs, often the stone or enamel piece is the starting point and my ideas flow from there. At other times, the design springs from an interesting shape or concept— often integrating organic and fluid curves. I enjoy creating whimsical statement pieces that prompt smiles, conversations and connection.
Throughout the year, my jewelry is available at Galerie Old Chelsea. And since 2023, I have been an active member of the Chelsea-Wakefield Studio Tour, which takes place annually in the fall. A sample of my pieces are on my website (traceyosullivanjewelry.com) and Instagram (@treehousegalleree).
