ARTIST STATEMENT

Stephen Towle is a Canadian artist, a father of four, and a retired graphic designer currently living in Chelsea, Quebec. 

An avid artist since childhood, he is best known for his combination of surrealist depictions and atypical color scheme on art paper, canvas and wood panels. For Steve, art is meant to be a cerebral experience as much as an aesthetic one, wherein the viewer must not only observe but decipher the multiple meanings of a work.

In his view, art must break molds. Art must break boundaries and allow for an artist to feel the freedom inherit in creative expression—which is why the likes of Picasso, Dali, M.C. Escher, and cubism have heavily influenced his works over the years. Until October 2021, Steve has taken inspiration from living remotely in the lush forests of Vancouver Island with his wife and dog.

He has succeeded in being a Signature Member with the Federation of Canadian Artists.
