John Parkes

My work is largely comprised of images found on telephone poles and on construction walls. These sites are often full of posters advertising products and events, often in multiple layers and, generally, 'atmospherically developed' by sun, wind, rain, and competition from other advertisers who rip down old posters and/or plaster them over with new material. I began to find subjects everywhere, on poles as well as on walls, in all the places I have travelled. The language on the posters changes, depending on the country, but the nature of the images is consistent.

In his book Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business, Neil Postman suggests that all societies have an underlying dialogue that focuses on that society's values, morals, what we think we need to be happy, acceptable ways of achieving our goals. This discussion takes place in the movies and television we make and watch, the advertising we are bombarded with, the religions we practice, and on and on. What we talk about, and how we talk about it, reveal what we find important. My images are part of that discussion.
