There is a nugget of truth in each of my paintings. I tell stories (sometimes with tongue in cheek), creating archetypal mythologies inspired by my observations of the land and its creatures. The changing seasons, my life in Canada and particularly in the Gatineau Hills all inspire me. I see Spirit in Nature – it fills me with wonder, awe and delight. My paintings are filled with birds flying overhead, smoking campfires, loons calling on the lake, fish jumping in the river, and languid hills resting under a full moon.
My sculptures reflect my love affair with the miniature world in my wild garden. Time consuming and painstaking to make, the flowers have taught me great patience. With each piece I observe and photograph the fleeting blooms, create the sewing patterns, shape and re-shape each element before I cut out, sew, stuff, quilt, assemble and paint the large forms. They are made from artist’s canvas, supported by hidden wires and aluminum rods. Wall-mounted on wooden sconces, they project out into the room.
