Johanna Nousiainen is a fibre artist and arts educator. Her art work expresses a strong emotional response to changes in nature, place and identity. Johanna’s work explores the limits of the material and memories held in objects to form new knowledge and understanding. Her working process embraces the unexpected and works to create pieces that move beyond discipline boundaries. Through the use of natural materials and dyes and traditional techniques such as felting and weaving, Johanna draws from a rich cultural tradition to create fibre works that are both deeply rooted in Finnish tradition and highly contemporary with influences from around the world.
